How Margot Robbie Started Her Acting Career
Before Hollywood, Robbie became known to Australian television viewers through the long-running soap opera Neighbours. She joined the series in 2008 as Donna Freedman and remained with the show until 2010. Her work there helped establish her as a professional actor and gave her valuable on-camera experience.
She later appeared in the television series Pan Am and took film roles including About Time. These projects gradually expanded her profile outside Australia.
The major turning point came with Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street in 2013. Robbie played Naomi Lapaglia opposite Leonardo DiCaprio, and the film introduced her to a much wider international audience. The role became an important foundation for the career that followed.
From Supporting Roles to Major Characters
After her breakthrough, Robbie avoided staying within one particular genre. She appeared in films such as Focus, The Legend of Tarzan, and Z for Zachariah. She also began taking on characters that demanded very different performances.
Her portrayal of Tonya Harding in I, Tonya was particularly significant. The role earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress, marking her first Oscar nomination. The Academy lists Robbie among the nominees for the 90th Academy Awards for her performance as Harding.

The project also strengthened the connection between Robbie’s acting career and her production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, which she founded with Tom Ackerley and partners.
